## Choosing a format

- **SVG:** preferred for websites, design tools, and unlimited scaling. Photo SVGs are self-contained wrappers around the approved photograph.
- **PNG:** use when transparency or lossless output matters. Best default for platform icons and logos.
- **JPG:** use for email, documents, and systems that reject transparency. Reversed logos are placed on ink; primary logos are placed on stone.
- **PDF:** use in print workflows and office documents. The SVG remains the editable vector master.
- **GIF:** compatibility fallback for older systems. The supplied GIFs are static.

Do not upscale a raster file. Choose the smallest supplied width at or above the displayed size. For high-density screens, use an export approximately twice the CSS display width.

Preview files are generated from the corresponding PNG exports with Sharp's `webp({ lossless: true })`. Their names include the first 12 hexadecimal characters of the WebP file's SHA-256 hash, allowing immutable caching. When replacing a preview, generate a new hashed filename and update its `src` and `srcset` references in `index.html`; never overwrite an existing hashed file with different content.

## Photo notes

The photographs are real CC0-licensed images sourced through Wikimedia Commons. They show CERN archive storage and the Glasgow City Chambers council chamber; they do not depict Unhistoric Acts people, offices, collections, or events. See `PHOTO-LICENSES.md` for provenance and `BRAND-GUIDE.md` for usage guidance.
